Two small devotional images (Passion scenes), Anonymous, probably circa 1720, mixed media on paper Mixed media on paper (print base with subsequent coloring). 1) Christ at the pillar. Full-length depiction of Christ bound to a column. The body is depicted strictly frontally, the anatomy defined by clear, contoured lines. The incarnations are colored in flat areas, with sparingly used reddish accents to suggest the flagellation wounds. The background and architecture are greatly reduced and serve to focus on the central figure. Circumferential dark framing line, partially accentuated in gold. Image dimensions 11.8 × 17.2 cm; frame dimensions 16.2 × 22.1 cm. 2) Pietà (Mary with the dead Christ). Mary holds the lifeless Christ; the figures are calm and frontal, the composition concentrates on the relationship between the two bodies. Precise, contouring lines; two-dimensional coloration with differentiated modeling of the incarnates. The robes are executed in clearly delineated color fields. Circumferential dark framing line, partially with gold-colored accentuation. Framed in simple wooden frames. The paper supports each with age-related yellowing. Isolated traces of printing and creasing. Minor local abrasion to the coloration, particularly near the edges and corners. Overall stable condition.
