Jean-Olivier Hucleux (1923-2012) Self-Portrait No. 1, 25.9.1985 Graphite on Canson paper Signed and dated lower left 107 x 71 cm Provenance: - Private collection, Paris - Private collection, Brussels Exhibition: Lyon, Musee d'Art Contemporain, "Jean-Olivier Hucleux 1971-1999", October 22, 1999-January 16, 2000, reproduced full page in the exhibition catalogue, p. 94. Note: Self-portraiture holds a fundamental place in Jean-Olivier Hucleux's oeuvre. A leading figure of French Hyperrealism, he worked obsessionally from photographs to depict his own face, questioning identity and the status of the painter. In 1985-86, Hucleux shifted his focus toward graphite drawing: he first produced his self-portrait and prepared a series of drawn self-portraits for the 1987 International Contemporary Art Fair (FIAC) at Galerie Beaubourg. He continued this series of portrait drawings for upcoming exhibitions scheduled in 1991.
