FRANÇOIS MICHEL AUBERT 1829–1906 Ball at Marshal Bazaine’s residence in honor of the Emperor and Empress of Mexico, Mexico City, ca. 1864. Photograph. Albumen print mounted on cardboard and inscribed in ink beneath the image. Image: 34.7 x 26.8 cm; mount: 46.6 x 46.3 cm Appointed Marshal of France in 1864, Bazaine commanded the French corps during the Mexican expedition. He met his second wife, the young Maria Josefa de la Peña, at a grand welcome ball held at the Buenavista Palace in honor of the arrival of Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Charlotte in Mexico. At their lavish wedding in 1865, the Emperor and Empress agreed to serve as godparents to the newlyweds. On that occasion, Maximilian presented the couple with an extraordinary wedding gift: the Buenavista Palace in Mexico City. Relations subsequently deteriorated, as the emperor suspected the marshal of plotting against him, and the two men became competitors in the gold mining business.
