PEDRO MEYER 1935– La Virgen arrinconada, Mexico, 1976. Photograph. Silver print, 1978, signed and dated in pencil on the back. Image: 28 x 19 cm; sheet: 35.5 x 28 cm In the mid-1970s, while traveling through rural Mexico for a newspaper project, Pedro Meyer discovered this young Indigenous girl, who had been forced into prostitution at a young age. Pedro Meyer published the photograph to draw attention to the fact that young Indigenous women were being exploited by landowners and forced into prostitution. The response was so significant that the Mexican Congress enacted a law to protect young indigenous women from exploitation and prostitution, imposing severe penalties on perpetrators. Bibliography: Camera, Bucher, Switzerland, October 1978.
