EDMOND DUTHOIT MISSION - ALGERIA Collection of photographs taken by Edmond Duthoit: Mansourah Complex, Sidi Boumediene (El Eubbad), Tlemcen, Nemours, Algeria, 1872–1889. Photographs. 19 albumen prints, pencil captions on the backs, some with small tears. 19.4 x 14 cm to 28.5 x 22 cm In 1872, Edmond Duthoit, a student of Viollet-le-Duc, was appointed chief architect of historic monuments in Algeria. He then used photography to guide his restoration projects. Yet, while architecture remains the primary subject of these photographs, the quality of the images reveals a genuine aesthetic sensibility and an understanding of plans and spaces. Thus, Duthoit blends the monumentality of architecture and flawless technique with the romanticism of ruins and picturesque scenery. As a result, his images transcend the status of working documents and become aesthetic creations in their own right.
