In 1551 he joined the French embassy to Constantinople, sent by Henry II of France to the court of Suleiman the Magnificent in an effort to renew the Franco-Ottoman alliance. First published in French in 1567, the account combines first-hand observation with a broader survey of the Ottoman Empire and was rapidly translated into several European languages. Its sixty costume plates proved highly influential and circulated widely during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, offering a European perspective on Ottoman society.
