Middle East.- Clive (Robert) A Series of Lithographic Drawings from Sketches...between the Persian Gulf & the Black Sea, 3 parts in 2, first edition, each part with letterpress description of plates, 26 lithograph plates on 24 sheets, most tinted, one folding (of Palmyra), some large marginal defects to a few plates and some leaves of letterpress, especially at beginning and end of each part, some foxing, original cloth-backed printed wrappers, part 2/3 lacking lower wrapper, other wrappers heavily browned and with some large defects commensurate with the contents, preserved in modern cloth-backed boards portfolio with ties, [Bobins III, 1086; not in Abbey, Atabey, Blackmer or Tooley], folio, Dickinson & Co., [1852]. *** A rare survival in the original wrappers. Despite the defects mentioned, the plates have large enough margins for the images themselves not to be affected. This scarce work, with views of Iraq, Syria and Turkey, including Ctesiphon, Erzurum, Damascus, Van, Amadiyah, Nimrod, Bagdad, Mosul, and Karbala, was issued in 3 formats: tinted (as here); coloured; and coloured and mounted. There are no letterpress titles present, the wrappers presumably sufficing. No copy at auction since 2016
