Atlases.- Kitchin (Thomas) A New Universal Atlas, first edition, letterpress title and list of plates, 66 folding and/or double-page engraved maps in full original hand-colouring by or after Samuel Dunn, John Rocque, John Lodge, Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, Robert Mylne, Thomas Jefferys, John Roberts, James Rennell, Andrew Dury and others, plus an additional map not called for bound after the first, a few minor repairs to versos at folds, some offsetting, show-through and browning, a few creases, modern half calf over marbled boards, folio, Printed and Published by Robert Laurie and James Whittle, 1796. *** A magnificent atlas and rarely found with all maps in full original hand-colouring. The scale of some of the maps is truly spectacular: this atlas contains several maps that if joined would form large-scale wall maps, including “Asia and its Islands”; "A General Map of the World or Terraqueous Globe"; "England and Wales"; "Scotland"; "Ireland"; "Africa" and three maps of American interest: “The whole Continent of America”; “North America...”; and “South America.” Eight editions of this work were issued on an almost annual basis from 1796 until 1807. The publishers constantly changed and improved the atlas in an effort to outdo not only their competitors, but also to improve on the previous edition. The extra map (also fully coloured) shows Great Britain, France, Ireland and parts of Spain, Germany and Denmark on a circuilar projection showing distances and bearings of places within 700 miles of London.
