Orchids.- Japan.- Blume (Carl Ludwig) Collection des Orchidées les plus remarquables de l'Archipel Indien et du Japon, first edition, additional lithograph title, and 70 plates, of which 56 are hand-coloured and 1 double-page, contemporary green half morocco, expertly rebacked preserving original gilt spine and recornered, [Cordier, Japonica 538; Nissen BBI 175; Stafleu & Cowan 569], folio, Amsterdam, C.G. Sulpke, 1858. *** First major work on the orchids of the Dutch East Indies and Japan. This work is almost identical to, and published at the same time as, the first volume of the supplement to Blume's "Flora Javae". Blume was director of the Buitenzorg Botanic Garden and later became director of the State Herbarium at Leyden. For the description of the orchids of Japan, Blume was helped by Von Siebold who gave him original drawings of Japanese orchids by Japanese botanists. Most of the illustrations are done after drawings by A.J. Wendel and are all lithographed by G. Severeyns, the best botanical lithographer of its time. Provenance: Portsmouth Free Public Library (bookplate and ink stamp to one text leaf).
