Conrad Loddiges was a Dutch-born horticulturalist who settled in Hackney and worked as a nurseryman. He and his sons introduced several new species to Britain, including many plants from America. By the early nineteenth-century, the Loddiges's family nursery had become famous throughout the world for introducing rare and exotic plants to Britain, most of which were later illustrated in this work.
