Tregear (Gabriel Shire) [Black Jokes], 12 hand-coloured caricatures, aquatints with fine original hand-colouring by G. Hunt after W. Summers, some soiling to margins, a couple of tears, all guarded into contemporary blue half morocco, gilt, rubbed, 4to, c.1830s. *** Gabriel Shear Tregear (1802-1841) was an English publisher of caricatures and prints, running his "Humorous and Sporting Print Shop" from 123 Cheapside, London. In their style and subject matter, these satirical but offensively racist images playing on racial stereotypes are an adaptation of Edward W. Clay’s earlier lithographic series ‘Life in Philadelphia’ (1828–30), which sought to lampoon and ridicule the social pretensions of black Philadelphians through a number of exaggerated situations and compositions. The plates offered here are: The Promenade, The Lady Patroness of Alblacks, Marriage a la Mode, The Christening, Venus and Adonis, The Route, The Card Party, The Breaking Up, Othello, The Concert, Miss White's Birthday Party, The Lubbers Quarrel.
