Orwell (George) Kolhosp Tvarin [Animal Farm]., translated by Ivan Chernyatinskii, first Ukrainian edition, half-title, a few tears and repairs to portrait of Orwell, some scattered spotting and surface soiling, toning, original pictorial wrappers, rubbed and soiled with a few tears and creases, spine chipped with some loss, joints splitting, 8vo, [Munich], Vidavnitstvi Prometei, [1947]. *** Including a 6pp. foreword specially written by George Orwell for this edition. The scholar, Ihor Shevchenko, wrote to Orwell with the aim of publishing Animal Farm in Ukrainian, specifically for the post-World War II Ukrainian displaced-persons community. Owing to the political sensitivities surrounding the post-war Allied relationship with the Soviet Union, large numbers of copies were reportedly seized by U.S. soldiers and handed over to Soviet authorities, where they were confiscated and presumably destroyed. As a result, surviving copies of this edition are exceptionally scarce and of considerable historical significance.
