Shelley considered Adonais the "least imperfect" of his poems and oversaw the printing himself. In the preface he attacked the critics of the Quarterly Review who had lambasted Keats' Endymion, claiming that their negative reviews had "produced the most violent effect on his susceptible mind; the agitation thus originated ended in the rupture of a blood-vessel in the lungs".
