[Dupin (Lucile-Aurore)], "George Sand". [Autograph Manuscript of 'Varieties' a Book Review of Auguste Vacquerie's Les Miettes de l'Histoire'], manuscript in French, 14pp. on paper stubs, signed by the author at end, a few light finger soils, contemporary ink inscription at head of p.1 in different hand, near-contemporary dark blue morocco, gilt, very light sunning to spine, very minor rubbing to joints, 8vo, [1860s]. *** In this review, George Sand critiques August Vacquerie's Les Miettes de l'Histoire while expressing her apprehension of the characteristics of Jersey's residents and its relationship with a fraught, post-July Revolution France. The article was published in 1863 in "La Presse". This is important archival intervention in the modern assessment of Sand's work, especially concerning her activity in larger literary circles and her interest in the mid-century French political atmosphere. Provenance: Sold at the William Randolph Hearst sale, Part III, in 1938. Bookplates of Alfred Heacock Whittaker and The Taft School Library (with inscription 'Gift of Dr. Whittaker - 1953)
