André Masson, Animal Futurism. 1910s–1920s. Pastels and charcoal on paper mounted on canvas. 287x212 mm. Signed in pencil lower right and titled lower right. The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity based on a photograph by Carmine Benincasa. Provenance: The artist’s studio; Cleto Polcina Collection; Tiziano Art Gallery; private collection. The artist never adhered to Futurism but, like others—including Marcel Duchamp with *Nude Descending a Staircase*—he conducted studies on movement, including this one. The study of physical movement, in turn, evolved into a study of inner dynamism, the human psyche, and the automatic processes of the unconscious and the irrational. In 1924, he signed the Surrealist Manifesto. (1) In a gilded frame with some missing parts: 32.5 x 25 cm. The paper is mounted on canvas and shows minimal signs of aging.
