A beautiful collection of 13 tempera and pencil drawings on paper, many of which are mounted on backing card. 85/150 x 85/315 mm. Various design notes related to printing and page layout are annotated in pencil or brown ink on the backing sheet. This is the second part of the illustrations—both within the text and as standalone pieces—for Ruggero Bonghi’s *Le feste romane*, published in Milan by Hoepli in 1891. The first, more substantial group was offered for sale following the May 2024 exhibition at the Libreria Antiquaria Gonnelli. The book offers a detailed description, organized by month, of ancient Roman festivals and religious celebrations—such as the Saturnalia, the Lupercalia, the Calends, and many others—from the founding of Rome to the end of the Roman Empire. Bonghi was a distinguished Italian politician and man of letters, serving as a member of parliament and Minister of Education during the Minghetti government. The stylistic differences in the drawings suggest that Ugo Fleres is responsible only for various initial letters and little else, while the illustrations for the plates outside the text and a large portion of the headings are by Giulio Aristide.
