Black charcoal with white highlights on brown paper. 225x193 mm. Dry stamp of the Parri Collection in the lower left corner. On the reverse, in pencil: “Storia di Cesare a Pitti” in the lower left corner, and “30” in the lower right corner. A high-quality sketch for the figure of Apollonius of Rhodes, commissioned by Leopold II of Tuscany in 1836, and intended to decorate a room in the Meridiana of Palazzo Pitti as part of the cycle of “The Deeds of Caesar”: “in eleven panels, three of which on the vault and the other eight as a frieze around the walls.” The figure depicts the right-hand side, which also appears in a second complete preparatory sketch now preserved in Prato and described in detail in the Catalog of Cultural Heritage under National Code “0901405162.” The work depicts a rhetoric lesson taught by Apollonius of Rhodes to his disciples, among whom is the young Julius Caesar, who, seated with one leg crossed over the other and his chin resting on his arm, listens attentively and intently to his teacher’s words. The scene takes place outdoors, under a portico; in the background, to the left, a city is faintly visible. (1) Preserved within a beautiful mat and partially secured with adhesive tape along the left margin. Traces of old adhesive on the reverse. Overall excellent condition, aside from negligible patina.
