549 - A Napoleon III Gilt-Bronze Garniture of Three Centrepieces, by Monbro Ainé, the oval basket with triple candle branches hung with fruiting vine supported by two maidens about shells and scrolls and with four putti riding sea creatures, on an architectural base with foliate and scroll supports centred by masks, stamped mark 65cm high and two similar smaller centrepieces 45cm high Having returned to Paris from England in 1801, the Maltese craftsman Georges-Marie Monbro, founded his eponymous business in 1801, which became one of Europe’s most celebrated firms, supplying furniture to Louis-Philippe, the Duchesse d’Aumale and the Palais de Saint-Cloud. Under his son Georges-Alphonse Monbro the firm greatly expanded, concentrating on the historicist revival styles of the time based on examples from the ‘Ancien Regieme’, as well as developing his business as an ‘antiquaire-marchand de curiosités’, frequently buying at the Hotel des Ventes and acquiring items for important collectors such as John and Joséphine Bowes.
