Java, first half of the 20th century, Three batik pieces and two painted Wayang Kulit panels. ca. 1940. Painting on cotton. Three batik panels (hand-painted and block-printed on cotton): 51.5 x 203 cm, 104 x 104 cm, 106 x 142, and two painted panels on cotton, 71.5 x 129 cm, 34 x 117.5 cm, featuring scenes from Wayang Kulit, the traditional Javanese shadow puppet theater. Wayang kulit is performed using figures carved from thin buffalo hide (ranging from 5 mm to 1.5 cm in thickness on average) and finely crafted: the upper limbs are movable, while the head is firmly attached to the torso. The puppet’s movement is controlled by three rods, attached respectively to the two upper limbs and the base of the figure. The motifs depicted on the fabrics evoke stylized figures drawn from Hindu epic poems such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata (Rama, Sita, or the cosmic tree Gunungan), which serve as the inspiration for the plays of this unique form of theater. (5) A few small woodworm holes and some minor tears along the edges.
