Republic of China, Two plates depicting Lunar New Year celebrations (Lantern Festival). Shanghai: Kelly and Walsh, 1930. Color photogravure (630x305 mm). Pair of color illustrations from Juliet Bredon’s volume, *Chinese New Year Festivals: A Picturesque Monograph of the Rites, Ceremonies, and Observances Thereof*. Six color photogravure illustrations based on selected Chinese paintings, Shanghai: Kelly and Walsh, 1930. A pair of traditional Chinese illustrations depicting a family celebrating the Lunar New Year. One of the two depicts the custom of setting off firecrackers to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck, with children setting off fireworks while others watch from a window. Both plates are mounted on a scroll with a silk border; a small traditional red tear-off calendar is attached at the top, showing both Gregorian and Eastern lunisolar calendar dates. The gold characters embossed on the red cover read Wǔ fú lín mén, a famous traditional blessing that literally means “May the five blessings cross the threshold of your door” (referring to longevity, wealth, health/peace, virtue, and a peaceful old age). This type of small daily almanac is usually hung in homes to bring good luck and prosperity. (2) Some blooming patterns and woodworm damage on one of the two panels. In old dark brown box frames. With frame: 67x36 cm.
