China, Qing Dynasty, Menglian and Jiandai Curtain. 1880–1910. 1) Traditional door curtain (known as Menglian) or ornamental drape/valance for entrances, used both as an interior divider and as ceremonial decoration. Made with appliqué embroidery. The upper part features a square yellow panel with an intertwined design in the center reminiscent of the infinity knot, and at the four corners, a coin motif symbolizing good fortune, prosperity, and wealth. The coral-colored lower section features a wide arched opening characterized by elegant curvilinear carvings and volutes, embellished with small green circular inserts that evoke jade details. Dimensions: 230 x 115 cm. 2) Set of Chinese ornamental ribbons (known as Jiandai, “sword belts”), historically associated with traditional clothing (Hanfu) and interior decorative elements. Jiandai originated as hanging elements fastened to the waist or integrated into ceremonial belts. Over time, they also became important auspicious interior decorations, typically hung on either side of the curtains of a double bed or near household altars during festivals. (2) Signs of use.
