268 - China, Qing Dynasty, Jifu court robe. 1880–1910. The term “jifu” refers to the semi-formal ceremonial robe of the court, also known as the “dragon robe” due to the intricate decorative motifs that typically adorned it. A coral-pink ceremonial robe with elaborate embroidery in colored silk and gold thread: on the front and back, three five-clawed dragons (typical of high-ranking attire), rendered almost entirely in gold thread, chase after flaming pearls, a symbol of power and good fortune. The dragons are surrounded by clouds, bats, and floral motifs, as well as other symbols of the eight precious treasures. Two dragons are also embroidered on the shoulders of the robe and one inside the right front panel, visible only when the robe moves, for a total of nine dragons—as traditionally found on imperial robes (eight visible externally, on the chest, back, shoulders, and skirt, and one on the inside of the front panel). At the bottom is a wide ruffle with multicolored diagonal lines representing the deep ocean (lishui); rocks emerge from the waves above, positioned at the four cardinal points to symbolize the stability of the Earth. On the front, two beautifully embroidered phoenixes appear on the sleeves. A border along the neckline and opening features gold motifs on a light blue background. Green silk lining, two knotted buttons in black trim, and four decorated gold spherical buttons. Dimensions: length 97 cm (from collar to hem), width 145 cm (from cuff to cuff). (1) Signs of wear.
