China, Qing Dynasty, Jifu court robe. 1880–1910. The term “jifu” refers to the semi-formal ritual robe of the court, also known as the “dragon robe” due to the intricate decorative motifs that typically adorned it. The robe is made of coral-pink silk with colorful embroidery and gold thread. The embroidery on the front and back depicts three five-clawed dragons (typical of high-ranking attire), rendered almost entirely in gold thread, chasing after fire gems. In the background are the symbols of the eight precious treasures, among ruyi clouds, bats, and other auspicious symbols. Five-clawed dragons also appear on the sleeves and one inside the right front panel, for a total of nine dragons—as traditionally featured on imperial robes (eight visible externally, on the chest, back, shoulders, and skirt, and one inside the panel). The robe ends with a wide flounce featuring multicolored diagonal lines representing the deep ocean (lishui); rocks emerge above the waves, positioned at the four cardinal points to symbolize the stability of the Earth. Lining made of woven straw fabric with a dedicatory inscription: “Respectfully dedicated to Chongzhen Monastery” / “The disciple Xiong Peng, having received divine grace, records and respectfully offers this to the Hall of Mount Lu (Lushantang).” The robe was therefore a ceremonial gift for a place of worship. Dimensions: length 121 cm. Width: 185 cm (from cuff to cuff). (1) Signs of wear: some tears, unstitched sections.
