China, Qing Dynasty, Two Ma Mian Qun Skirts. 1880–1910. Two yellow silk skirts: one made of textured fabric with a white band and sand-colored borders, featuring a lower panel embroidered with a floral motif and scattered embroidered flowers; the other made of plain fabric with a blue band and light blue borders, featuring a lower section with a floral-patterned embroidered panel and scattered embroidered flowers. The Ma Mian Qun, or “horse-face skirt,” is a traditional Chinese garment that is highly representative of the hanfu (the traditional Han costume). This style originated during the Song and Liao dynasties (960–1279) and became famous and widespread during the subsequent Ming and Qing dynasties. The name “horse-face” derives from the structure of ancient Chinese city walls (mamian), which had flat, fortified protruding sections similar to the smooth panels of the skirt. It has a very distinctive shape with smooth, overlapping panels on the front and back (the “horse-face” part) and pleated sides. Dimensions: length 115 cm. Waist: 95 cm. Base width: 220 cm. (2) Signs of wear. One of the two has some unstitched seams.
Delivery is optional. You can use the carrier of your choice. The stated price does not include the lot price or the auction house fees.
