Tibet, 19th century, Thangka depicting the Pancha Raksha. Tempera on canvas. 710 x 445 mm. Thangka depicting the Pancha Raksha. Pancha Raksha, or the Five Protector Goddesses, is a term used to refer to both the sacred texts and the deities of the “five protector goddesses,” figures widely found in the Mahayana-Vajrayana tradition. Each of these five deities performs specific functions and is responsible for promoting well-being and happiness in the world, preventing natural disasters and protecting against them, curing snakebites, overcoming fear, and warding off plagues and epidemics. The five Pancha Raksha are: Maha Pratisara, Maha Sahasrapramardini, Mahamayuri, Sitavati, and Mantramanudharani. Each of these five female deities takes on multiple forms—characterized by multiple heads and arms—and is associated with different traditions of practice. The Pancha Raksha deities are particularly widespread in Nepal, but their presence is also attested throughout the Himalayan region and in Central Asia, as well as in China, Korea, and Japan.
