Camillo Saccenti (or Sacenti), Geography of the Bologna Region. n.d. [1651, after 1689]. Copper engraving on four plates. 973x774 mm. Sheet: 1000x808 mm. In the upper right corner, a large compass rose; below it, a scale expressed in Bolognese, Ferrarese, and Ravenna paces; and at the bottom, a large cartouche with a pair of crossed keys, surmounted by a parasol crowned with a cross (symbol of the city as part of the Papal States) With the title: “To the Most Illustrious Senate of Bologna, Camillo Sacenti, Public Surveyor, humbly dedicates and donates this Geography of the Bolognese Territory as a testament to his most humble service / newly updated to its present state following subsequent changes.” A large printed map drawn up by Camillo Sacenti, public surveyor and superintendent of waterways for the city of Bologna, and published for the first time in 1651. The map was subsequently republished with some variations (additions and omissions of certain localities, modifications to the hydrography of some areas, and the addition of boundary lines), for which reference should be made to the cited bibliography. The revised editions feature the addition in the cartouche of “novo p[er] le mutationi seguite Ridotta al stato presente” and, in some cases, the date: one reprint is dated 1668, and at least two others date to the 1680s (1688, 1689); in some other copies, such as this one, no date is given. The map covers the territory from Bologna to Ferrara and Ravenna, as well as part of the Modena area and a large portion of Polesine. Significant emphasis is placed on rivers and valleys, with the borders between the states indicated by a light dashed line, as well as the hydraulic works necessary for the Bassa region; the main land routes, which often intersect with waterways, are clearly marked. All four sheets comprising the map are on slightly thick laid paper with a watermark of a “double circle surmounted by a clover over the letters P.P.” visible on each sheet. Bibliography: R. (1) Map is intact with margins as originally intended. Signs of joining and folding on the sheet. Slight signs of wear.
