Niccolò Pagni and Luigi Bardi, Map of the Territory of the Cisalpine Republic and Part of the Neighboring States. Florence: published by Pagni and Bardi, 1797. Colored copper engraving. 728x1450 mm. Sheet: 820x1495 mm. Large map of northern Italy extending to Trieste and Trento, including Savoy and Switzerland, and central Italy as far as Livorno and Ancona, documenting the political situation of the country at the end of 1797: the borders of the Cisalpine Republic are those established by the Treaty of Campoformio, and the Veneto region is labeled: “States of the House of Austria”; the map lists the names of the departments, from which it is clear that Nice and Savoy no longer belong to Piedmont, and above Massa it reads “Department of the Apuan Alps.” At the bottom, in the Ligurian Sea, there is an inset showing a map of Valtellina and the territories of Bormio and Chiavenna, which Napoleon had annexed to the Cisalpine Republic in 1797. On the right, in the Adriatic Sea, is a legend with an “Explanation of Symbols”; in the lower left corner are the title, publication details, and date, with metric scales within a typographic box further to the right. The Cisalpine Republic was a satellite state of the French Republic, and this map served as a fundamental tool for understanding the new political order at the end of the 18th century: the detailed depiction of borders and regions underscores the importance of territorial control and governance during that era. (1) Sheet intact with original margins. Joint mark where two sheets were joined on the left side. Very slight yellowing of the sheet. Traces of old folds, some repaired marginal tears, minor defects.
