230 - Francesco Maillard [attributed to], Plan of Radicofani Castle. c. 1750. Pen and brown ink, brush and watercolor in gray, red, and green. At the bottom of the reverse, in pen and brown ink, “Maillard” in old-style handwriting. Heavy laid paper with a watermark of the “Strasbourg lily on number 4” (Churchill, 403–408). 535 × 750 mm. In the upper left corner, within a cartouche adorned with masks and fruit garlands, are the title and the “Notes,” a legend with 23 lettered references and 3 numbered references (1 through 3) to the parts of the fortress: the five bastions, the gates, the guardhouse, the ammunition and fodder depots, and the commander’s quarters. At the bottom is the “Scale of Poles or Arms, six to one in Florentine Cloth.” To the left, beneath the cartouche, is a monochrome gray view of the hilltop, featuring the fortress, and the town; the right side is occupied by a colored plan of the fort and the buildings at its base. In 1297, the Rocca di Radicofani was conquered by the bandit Ghino di Tacco, who made it his stronghold. Based on the inscription on the reverse, the panel may be attributed to Francesco Maillard, who served Emperor Francis I from 1740 to 1760 as first lieutenant of artillery, engineer in the garrison of Grosseto, and captain of the Grenadiers of the Marine Battalion. In 1760, at the age of 45, while serving as First Captain, he was promoted to the rank of major in the General Directorate of Fortifications and Artillery—the office to which the military engineering corps reported—an office established in 1753. In 1762, he served as director of fortifications for the port of Livorno. (1) Sheet intact with a trace of a vertical fold in the center. A paper repair on the left margin; some minor marginal repairs.
