Marc'Antonio Dal Re, Giuseppe Leonardi, Domenico Felice Leonardi, View of the Courtyard in Castelazzo / Vue de la Cour dans Castelazzo. Milan: Giuseppe Richino Malatesta, 1743. Etching and engraving, hand-colored. 330x425 mm. Sheet: 364 x 490 mm. Plate from *Le Delizie della Villa di Castellazzo Descritte in Verso*, a richly illustrated description of Villa Arconati in Castellazzo, first published in Milan in 1743. A precious record of a grand Italian Rococo-style garden, redesigned according to French fashion. The villa had been built in the Palladian style, with an elaborate Italian garden created in Castellazzo in 1627 at the behest of Count Galeazzo Arconati. Subsequently, the gardens were redesigned in the French style, and the building itself was also transformed by Giovanni Ruggeri. The new gardens were celebrated in this work through engravings by Dal Re. Dal Re had previously compiled an illustrated description of the “villas di delizia” in the Milan area, published in 1726 and again in 1743 under the title *Ville di delizia*, which also included Villa Arconati. Drawing inspiration from this precedent, Leonardi produced this standalone publication dedicated exclusively to Villa Arconati. (1) Complete copy with original margins, slightly trimmed at the top left, and a binding crease in the center. Mounted at the top on modern cardboard.
