Willem Janszoon Blaeu, Elba Island / olim / Ilva. Amsterdam: Joan Blaeu, 1662. Hand-colored copper engraving. 232x256 mm. Sheet: 440x285 mm. Detailed map of the Island of Elba from the *Atlas Maior sive Cosmographia Blaviana*, first published in Latin in 1662 and subsequently in various languages between 1662 and 1665. Organized by geographic region, the work comprised twelve volumes covering the entire world, including the Mediterranean basin with the Aegean and Black Seas. This map is taken from the volume dedicated to Italy. In the upper left is a title cartouche, and in the lower right is another for the “Four-Mile Scale.” At the top of the page is the inscription “ILVA,/ hodiè/ELBA,” and below the engraving is the historical-descriptive text in Latin, featuring a beautiful ornate initial. (1) The sheet is intact, as originally mounted along the right edge onto modern cardboard. There is a small brown stain in the upper right corner.
