191 - Aaron Arrowsmith [by], New Geographical and Postal Map of Europe Based on the Latest Division of States and Countries, and Subsequently on the Most Recent Treaties. Compiled from Arrowsmith’s Large Map... Vienna: Artaria and Company, 1807. Colored copperplate engraving. 1315x1500 mm. Map derived from *Map of Europe Drawn from all the Best Surveys, and Rectified by Astronomical Observations*, drawn by Aaron Arrowsmith in 1796. In the upper left corner, the title and publisher’s information are in French; in the lower right corner, within a cartouche resembling a stone stele decorated with a cornucopia and symbols of war, the title and details are in German, along with the signature of the engraver Johann Spiegl (1776–1823). An impressive general map of Europe’s postal routes and political boundaries, published during a period of profound geopolitical upheaval marked by the Napoleonic Wars and subsequent treaties (such as the Treaty of Tilsit of 1807). (1) Copy mounted on canvas with traces of old folds and minor defects due to display and use. The map features ribbon loops along the top and bottom margins to allow for mounting on two movable rods finished in matte sage-green lacquer with lacquered and gilded pinecone finials, along with a hanging cord with tassels made of decorative trimmings, all contemporary.
