187 - Anonymous, first half of the 18th century, Map of the grounds of the distinguished Collegiate Church of St. Lorenzo, divided into four quarters (St. John the Evangelist Quarter / St. James Quarter / St. Roch Quarter / St. Philip Neri Quarter) c. 1730–1750. Pen and brown ink, brush and watercolor. 470 × 752 mm. At the top, a plan of the Castle of St. John the Baptist and a compass rose; on the right, a scroll-shaped cartouche for the St. Rocco District with a legend of the streets (Via Larga, Via di S. Gallo, Via Guelfa, etc.); below, a cartouche with the title, followed by a metric scale “of 600 common paces.” At the bottom right, a scroll-shaped cartouche for the S. Filippo Neri District (Canto alla Paglia, Borgo S. Lorenzo, Via de’ Martelli, etc.). On the left side are cartouches for the S. Gio: Evangelista district (Via Nuova, Via Faenza, etc.) and for the S. Iacopo district (Via dell’Amore, Via della Morina, etc.). A beautiful hand-drawn map of the area extending from north to south, descending from the Fortress of San Giovanni Battista (or Fortezza da Basso) down to Via Larga at the lower boundary. On the left, it is bounded by Via Faenza, the first section of which was once called Via della Stipa (in Ferdinando Ruggieri’s 1731 map of Florence, this name specifically refers only to the section up to what is now Via Sant’Antonino) and also *Via della Fornace*, as shown on this map. A portion of the route is labeled Borgo S. Iacopo, as in other 18th-century maps, due to the presence of the church of the same name in its central section, but above all because of the numerous properties that at the time were traceable to the Knights of Malta of the commandery known precisely as San Jacopo in Campo Corbolini. On the right side, the map ends with the city walls converging at Porta San Gallo at the end of the street of the same name. Heavy laid paper with a watermark featuring “a coat of arms with the letters FG over the letters GL.” (1) Vertical fold in the center; some old marginal repairs.
