182 - Carlo Zucchi, Scenic Perspective in the Old Style. ca. 1819–1820. Graphite pencil, pen and black ink, brush and gray and brown watercolor on ivory-colored paper. Signed “C. Zucchi” in pen and black ink in the lower right corner. 284x284 mm. A beautiful imaginary perspective rendered with extreme finesse of line and detail. The scene, in the classical style and with theatrical overtones—very much in Basoli’s typical vein—is introduced by the staircase in the foreground, flanked by two smoking braziers supported by caryatids and a sort of propylaeum with Doric columns. At the top of the staircase are three figures in classical attire: a man in armor and two veiled women. In the background is a vast basilica with a Doric colonnade and coffered vaults. (1) The sheet is mounted at all four corners onto a support of old gray cardboard. There is a small loss at the upper edge.
