Iacopo Chimenti (Iacopo da Empoli or l'Empoli), Study for Saint Elizabeth. ca. 1590–1599. Black pencil with sporadic highlights in white, ivory-colored laid paper. Sheet squared with red pencil and transferred to wood panel. 265 x 195 mm. On the reverse of the panel, in pen and brown ink in old-style handwriting, “Jacobo da Empoli”; at the top, a red wax seal with the initials “ET” (?). The drawing appears to be a preparatory study for the head of Saint Elizabeth in the oil-on-panel painting depicting the Madonna and Child, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Elizabeth (sometimes interpreted as Saint Anne), mentioned in the Guicciardini Collection. (1) The sheet has some cracks and small gaps that have been repaired using the traditional method of filling the gaps on a wooden support. Presented in an old black-lacquered shell-shaped frame with gold trim. With the frame: 37 x 30.3 cm.
