Meissen Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur A Meissen porcelain bowl and cover from a service with "Yellow Lion" decor Decorated in the Kakiemon style with a tiger, bamboo, prunus and scattered Oriental flowers. Brown border. Original cover with a cockerel finial. Blue crossed swords mark. Minor chips to the finial. Tureen with cover, height 18.5 cm. Around 1734 - 40. The lidded dish comes from a commission undertaken immediately after the dinner service for Augustus III, on which work had begun in January 1734. As the King also presented his own porcelain pieces as diplomatic gifts, the manufactory repeatedly had to replenish the resulting gaps. By 1765, the court could account for a stock of 2,500 service pieces bearing the “Yellow Lion”; further orders followed at least until 1768. Literature A detailed description of the service commission can be found in Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, vol. II, Munich, 2013, pp. 265 ff.
