An Italian majolica panel depicting the Presentation of Christ in the Temple Unglazed, unmarked reverse side with illegible inscription in sepia. Height 23 cm, width 30 cm. Castelli, attributed to Bottega Grue, c. 1700, painting probably by Carlo Antonio Grue (1655–1723). This picture plate shows Mary and Joseph presenting their child to Simeon. It had been prophesied that Simeon would not die until he had seen the Messiah (Luke 2:21-35). The model for this was the right panel of the Descent from the Cross triptych created between 1611 and 1614 by Peter Paul Rubens for Antwerp Cathedral. Provenance Private collection in the Rhineland, acquired in Paris in 1970. Literature Vgl. Castier, Catalogue des Céramiques du Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, Villeurbanne 2008, C 62, for a similar object depicting the Judgement of Solomon.
