A Dutch Delft and one Chinese Kraak dish with Wanli decor Model of a large plate, the marks of the firing supports on the underside of the Delft dish. The center painted with ducks/geese on rocks and 'indianische blumen'. Around the border alternating Taoist symbols. Unmarked. Small rim chips to the Delft dish. Diameter 28.7 and 30 cm. Late 17th C. and early Ming Dynasty, Wanli period, around 1600. As the secret of porcelain production remained unknown in Europe until the invention of porcelain at Meissen in the early 18th century, local faience manufactories imitated Chinese porcelain. Thus, in the case of these two bowls, the direct relationship between the Delft example and a Chinese prototype is unmistakable. Provenance The Dessing & Dröge collection.
