Two reliefs with scenes from the life of Simon Peter Walnut mounted on oak. Two panels with multi-figure scenes from the New Testament, with certain elements (mostly the heads) carved fully in the round. Older repairs to cracks; losses to several fingers (and half of Jesus’s hand); vertical additions to the sides of the panels. Height approx. 44 cm, width approx. 52 cm. Attributed to Northern France, late 16th/early 17th C. The reliefs depict Simon Peter as a fisher of men (Luke 5:5) and the rare representation of the parable of the coin in the fish (Matthew 17:27). The two scenes probably formed part of a series of reliefs illustrating the life of Simon Peter. They may originally have been intended for the choir stalls of a cathedral or a church dedicated to Saint Peter. Provenance Private collection, Belgium.
