Herman Volmar A large Cologne silver beaker with depictions of the Apostles. Decorated with strapwork and birds, below which are six finely engraved depictions of saints in strapwork medallions, inscribed S.IACOBVS, S.IOHANNES, S.PHILIPPVS, BARTHOLOMEVS, S.PETERVS and S.ANDREAS. A small, partially abraded engraved signature, “HV fecit 1647”. A second, identical engraving, probably added at a later date, reading “HV FECIT 1647”. H 19.5 cm, weight 414 g. Marks of Herman Volmar, 1647. The worn original inscription, dated 1647, was apparently copied out again at a later date by another hand in a different part of the body. In the process, the date was probably initially misread as 1617, which was later corrected. The illustration in Irmscher shows the condition prior to this correction. See Irmscher, op. cit., p. 263, footnote 183. Literature For the type, see Huelsmann Collection Catalogue, Bielefeld, 1986, p. 99, and Bemmann 1992, nos. 62 ff. For the master, see ibid., p. 282. The present beaker is illustrated in Irmscher, Das Kölner Goldschmiedehandwerk 1550–1800, Regensburg, 2005, no. 75.
