Gebrüder Schrödel Carl David Schrödel From the Dresden Court Silver Oval dish with a warming cloche Slightly scalloped, oval-shaped dish; the broad border with a moulded rim. The underside engraved with the monogram “FA” within a shield surmounted by an electoral hat for elector Frederick Augustus III, together with the weight inscription “6 Mr: 14 lt: 1 q: 1 d” and inventory number 22. The domed, stepped cloche with a plain surface and a large cast fruit finial serving as a handle. The interior engraved with the monogram “FA” beneath an electoral hat and engraved inventory number 3. Length of dish 42 cm; width 28.2 cm; height of cloche 19.5 cm; total weight 3,574 g. Dresden, marks of Carl David Schrödel and sons, around 1767 - 1782. Following the death of Augustus the Strong in 1733, his son Frederick Augustus II became Elector of Saxony. In the same year, he ordered a review of the richly stocked Court Silver Chamber, during which he had some of the earlier sets melted down, but also commissioned new services bearing the monogram FA from the goldsmithing families Ingermann and Schrödel. His grandson and successor, Elector Frederick Augustus III, who used the same monogram from 1763 onwards, had the new services expanded through numerous additional orders, including one placed in 1782 with the Dresden court goldsmiths Carl Christian and Friedrich Christian Schrödel, who continued their father Carl David’s workshop following his death in 1773 and retained their father’s maker’s mark. While the warming cloches, bearing the year letter S for 1767, were made by Carl David Schrödel himself, the accompanying platters came from a subsequent delivery by his two sons in 1782. Both can be clearly identified in the surviving "Inventory of the Items Held in the Electoral Saxon Court Silver Chamber" (Inventarium über das bey der Churfürstlichen Sächsischen Hof-Silberkammer befindliche Inventar der Dresdner Hofsilberkammer), dated 1 January 1774. On page 298, for example, the handwritten entry for the “Oval Centre Dish with FA in the Shield”, No. 22, records the engraved weight of 6-14-1-1 and states that it was made by “Schrödel and Sons (...) according to invoice dated June 1782”. Provenance From a private collection, Lower Saxony. Literature For more on the Dresden court silver see Arnold, Dresdner Hofsilber des 18. Jahrhunderts, Publikation der Kulturstiftung der Länder und der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Berlin/Dresden 1994, p. 30 ff., and ibid. p. 51 for Schrödel's maker's mark.
