Gaetano Zompini, Various Capriccios and Imaginary Landscapes, drawn by the famous Genoese artist Gio. Benedetto Castiglione, taken from the Zanetti collection, etched by Gaetano Zompini, a Venetian painter, and now newly compiled and published. Venice: 1786. Large oblong folio album (403x560 mm). TIB 46 (Commentary), p. 116. Hardcover binding with blue covers and a beige spine. Complete and uniform collection comprising a title page and twelve etchings, some of which bear the dates 1758 and 1759 on the plate. It is likely that the series was also published earlier, given that an early state of four sheets is known to exist with a dedication that was subsequently erased. According to the illustrated Bartsch, the engravings were published separately beginning in 1758 and later compiled into an album in 1786. In addition to the name of Castiglione, the author of the drawings, some sheets also bear the monogram of Anton Maria Zanetti, the owner of the drawings and the person who commissioned the engravings. None of the plates are signed by Zompini. For the documents on the basis of which Zompini’s authorship is now considered certain, see: SUCCI (1983), p. 461, nos. 632–636. Beautiful prints on Venetian laid paper with the “three crescent moons IMPERIALE” watermark and the letters “AV surmounted by a small lily flower.” (1) Binding shows obvious signs of wear, with loose stitching and missing paper on the spine. The plates are intact with wide, uncut margins and some minor imperfections on the edges.
