Lorenzo Tiepolo, Rinaldo and Armida Surprised by Ubaldo and Carlo. 1770–1776. Etching. 272 x 340 mm. Sheet: 292 x 358 mm. De Vesme, 4. Rizzi, 225. Succi, 3. In the center of the lower margin: “Joannes Bapta Tiepolo inv. et pinx./ Laurentius Filius del. et fecit.” Engraving taken from the reverse side of the painting—part of a series of four dedicated to the love affair between the sorceress and the knight—executed around 1755 by Giovanni Battista and now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. 1925.699). An excellent impression in the first state of 2, prior to the appearance of the number “14” in the upper right corner, on Venetian laid paper with a watermark of “three crescents and a countermark with the letter W,” where the W represents the two superimposed V’s of the manufacturer Vincenzo Vicario, a papermaker from Gaino who was active in Toscolano from the 16th to the 19th century and who, throughout the 18th century, produced large-format, high-quality paper. (1) Copy with margins of 5/12 mm beyond the copper engraving line. Some fractures, abrasions, and marginal tears repaired on the reverse. Spots of foxing. Minor defects and signs of wear.
