124 - Marcantonio Raimondi, The Descent from the Cross. c. 1520–1525. Engraving. 410 × 285 mm. Bartsch, XIV, 32. Shoemaker, 50. *Raphael invenit*, p. 171, 1. The subject is similar to the Borghese Deposition and relates to the study—unanimously attributed to Raphael by critics and dated to 1507—preserved at the Albertina (Vol. IV, 245 verso), which served as a preparatory sketch for the body of Jesus in the act of being taken down from the cross. Controversial, however, is the attribution of the drawing for the engraving—now lost—which was likely used by both Marcantonio and Ugo da Carpi for his chiaroscuro (Bartsch, XII, 22). On the plate, in the lower right corner, the drawing lacks the monogram. An excellent print, in its only state, of this engraving—which Bartsch already described as very rare—impressed with beautiful tonal variation on thin laid paper bearing the watermark “hammer or axe within a single circle.” (1) The print has been trimmed to the framing line, which is fully visible, and is mounted with two staples at the top within a modern cardboard mount. Some defects (creases, small abrasions, short tears) have been repaired with a backing of Japan paper.
