89 - Niccolò Nelli [circle of], Jupiter with an eagle and a thunderbolt, and Juno with peacocks, together on the clouds. ca. 1570. Etching and engraving. 182x294 mm. The engraving is a counterpart to a chalcograph of the same subject by an anonymous artist bearing the excudit of Niccolò Nelli (see the example at the Rijksmuseum, inv. RP-P-OB-105.245), as well as an oil painting on canvas currently on the antiquities market attributed to Agostino Ghirlanda (Massa, 1545/1550–Pisa, 1588). A beautiful print, printed with full and brilliant inking on laid paper bearing the watermark “anchor in a single circle surmounted by a star” (Woodward, 159–160). On the reverse, a collection mark belonging to the jurist Raffaele Alianello (Lugt, 5k). (1) Sheet trimmed to the outline of the copper plate, visible in places with a very narrow margin, mounted at the top within a modern cardboard mount.
