87 - Benedetto Montagna [after], Madonna and Child in a Landscape. c. 1540. Engraving. 200x128 mm. Bartsch, XIII, 6. Hind, V, 22 (copy). A deceptively accurate copy, executed in the same style as a rare engraving by Benedetto Montagna dating from ca. 1502. An excellent print by an anonymous engraver on fine, thin laid paper, also dating from the 16th century. Compared to the artist’s own engraving, this copy features a very fine framing line absent from the original; the boat in the background has a continuous deck rather than a double deck and lacks the stern deckhouse. (1) Copy with small margins extending beyond the outline and mounted at two points at the top within a modern cardboard mat.
