85 - Cosimo Mogalli Justus Sustermans, The Oath of the Florentine Senate to Ferdinand II de’ Medici. Etching. 595x1080 mm. Based on an idea by Justus Sustermans and a drawing by Francesco Petrucci (1660–1719). The engraving is a reverse copy of the same subject executed by Justus Sustermans in 1625; the work was placed the following year on the first floor of Palazzo Pitti, above the door between the Sala delle Nicchie and the Sala delle Statue, and is now on display in the Sala della Niobe at the Uffizi. The scene depicts the oath of allegiance sworn by the Senate and the high officials of Florence in the Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio on March 11, 1621, to the very young Ferdinand II, successor to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo II de’ Medici, who had died on February 28, 1621. The young man is portrayed seated on the left with the Florentine Marzocco; facing him are his two guardians, his mother, Grand Duchess Maria Maddalena of Austria, and his grandmother, Christina of Lorraine. In the foreground on the right is the Arno River. (1) Work mounted on a backing board. In a beautiful hazelnut-colored lacquered frame. With frame: 69 x 117.5 cm.
