Agostino Mitelli, Architectural Friezes Dedicated to His Excellency Mr. Hettore Ghisilieri by Agostino Mitelli, Painter. Bologna: 1645. Folio (395x280 mm). Half-parchment binding, decorated paper covers, author and title on the spine. On the inside front cover, an ex libris of architect Charles-Frédéric Mewès (1858–1914). Collection consisting of an engraved title page and 21 sheets, each featuring two vertical candelabra friezes with plant motifs, tendrils, and grotesques, engraved with a burin and sequentially numbered from 1 to 48. The pages bearing friezes 15 and 16, 24 and 25, and 43 and 44 are missing. The plates reproduce the friezes carved by Andrea Marchesi, known as “il Formigine,” on the pillars of what is now known as the portico of the Basilica of Saints Bartholomew and Gaetano in Bologna (at the beginning of Strada Maggiore)—a structure originally erected beginning in 1515–1516 as the façade for Palazzo Gozzadini. (1) Traces of stains and slight damage to the title page; the remaining pages are intact, though some have sporadic spots of foxing.
