79 - Pierre Lombart, *The Countesses*. London: Pierre Lombart, 1660–1662. Folio (555 × 440 mm). Half-leather volume with red leather spine and corners and marbled paper covers. Green leather label with gold lettering for the title on the front cover. On the inside front cover, a foreign ex-libris. Engraving. 345x239 mm. New Hollstein (van Dyck), 250–261. Complete series of 12 chalcography plates, in the second state of two, following the appearance of the letter in the lower margin. This series of twelve portraits based on works by van Dyck, engraved around 1660 and known as the “Countesses” due to the Latin inscription in the titles, is Lombart’s best-known work. All twelve plates are the same size and depict figures in three-quarter profile—ten women and two men—within 15-mm-wide borders that imitate the frames of the period. The women portrayed were: Anne Carr, Countess of Bedford; Lucy, Countess of Carlisle; Margaret, Countess of Carlisle (later of Manchester) (IV.39); Anna Sophia, Countess of Carnarvon; Elizabeth, Countess of Castlehaven; Elizabeth, Countess of Devonshire; Rachel, Countess of Middlesex (a title acquired following her second marriage in 1655); Penelope, Lady Herbert; Dorothy Sidney, Countess of Sunderland; and Elizabeth, Countess of Morton. The two men were Henry Howard, Earl of Arundel, and Philip Herbert, Earl of Pembroke. Four of the reproduced paintings were located at Northumberland House in London, commissioned from van Dyck by the 10th Earl of Northumberland. (1) Binding shows signs of wear. Plates have narrow margins and are attached to the left side of the volume’s pages; there are sporadic foxing spots and minor imperfections.
