Francisco Goya y Lucientes, *Porque esconderlos?* 1799 [5th Edition, 1881–1886]. Etching, burnished aquatint, and drypoint. 213 × 150 mm. Sheet: 295x213 mm. Harris, 65. The thirtieth plate from *Los Caprichos*, a series of 80 plates first published by Goya himself in 1799 and issued in a total of 12 editions. A beautiful proof in State III of 3, common to all publisher’s impressions, printed in sepia and black on thick, unlined paper. This copy is likely from the 5th edition printed by the Calcografía for the Real Academia between 1881 and 1886. The series, limited to 210 copies, was bound at the top edge, a feature that constitutes its main characteristic. ADDITION: Id., La filiacion. Etching and aquatint. 215x152 mm. Sheet: 317x215 mm. Harris, 92. Fifty-seventh plate from *Los Caprichos*. A fine proof on stiff, cream-colored laid paper; the sheet’s type and dimensions are consistent with a copy from the second edition printed by the Calcografía for the Real Academia around 1855. (2) WORK 1: Wide margins on three sides; the upper edge has been slightly trimmed to remove traces of the binding holes characteristic of this edition. WORK 2: Sheet intact with margins as originally printed.
