Albrecht Dürer, Christ as the Man of Sorrows, Seated. 1515. Etching on an iron plate. 112x68 mm. Sheet: 114x70 mm. Bartsch, VII, 22. Meder, 22. Strauss (Intaglio Prints), 81. Schoch, Mende, Scherbaum, I, 78. Dated “1515” at the bottom center, without the monogram. An excellent proof of this rare engraving in the first state of three and in the d/d variant according to Meder’s cataloging, prior to the cleaning of the plate to remove rust spots, with the framing lines still partially visible and the last digit of the date now barely discernible. Thin laid paper without a watermark, as noted by Meder for this variant. (1) The print is mounted with two stitches at the top within a modern cardboard mat. The margins are narrow and extend beyond the plate’s edge for long stretches. There is a minor loss at the lower left corner outside the engraved area.
